Food Substitutions

Allspice – For 1 tsp. Allspice, substitute: 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp ground cloves.

Apple Pie Spice - For 1 tsp. Apple Pie Spice, substitute: 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1/8 tsp cardamom.

Baking Powder – For 1 tsp. Baking Powder, substitute: 1/3 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp cream of tartar.  -or-  1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/2 c sour milk or buttermilk (Decrease liquid called for in recipe by 1/2 c.)  -or-  1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp vinegar or lemon juice used with sweet milk to make 1/2 c (decrease liquid called for in recipe by 1/2 c.).

Buttermilk – For 1 cup of Buttermilk, substitute: 1 cup plain yogurt  -or-  Put 1 Tbsp vinegar in measuring cup.  Add sweet milk to make 1 cup.  -or-  1 cup whole or skim milk plus 1 tbsp lemon juice  -or-  1 c milk plus 1 3/4 tsp cream of tartar.

Catsup/Ketchup - For 1 cup Catsup, if using for cooking, use this substitute:  Combine 1 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 2 tbsp vinegar.

Chili Sauce – For 1 cup of Chili Sauce, use this substitution:  1 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tbsp vinegar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, dash of ground cloves, and dash of allspice  -or-  1 cup catsup, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, dashes of ground cloves and allspice.

Cornmeal – For 1 cup of Self-rising Cornmeal, use this substitute: Add 1 1/2 tbsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt to 7/8 cup plain cornmeal.

Corn Syrup - For 1 cup of Corn Syrup, try these substitutions: Combine 7/8 cup sugar and 2 tbsp water  -or-  7/8 cup honey.

Curry Powder – For a substitute for Curry Powder, combine equal parts coriander, cumin, pepper, turmeric, and ginger  -or-  4 parts coriander, 2 parts turmeric, 2 parts cumin & 1 part ginger.

Honey - For 1 cup of Honey, substitute: 1 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water.

Powdered Sugar (Confectioner’s Sugar) - For 1 cup of Confectioners Sugar or Powdered Sugar, use this substitution:  In a food processor, combine 1 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tablespoon cornstarch.  Process using the metal blade attachment until it’s well blended and powdery.

Pumpkin Pie Spice - For 1 tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice, substitute:  1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ginger, 1/8 tsp allspice, and 1/8 tsp nutmeg – OR – use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves.

Shrimp Cocktail Sauce - If you need 1 cup of cocktail sauce, use 1 cup of ketchup plus 2 tablespoons (or to taste) of horseradish.

Tartar Sauce – For 1/2 cup of Tartar Sauce, use this substitution:  Mix 6 tablespoons of mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip) with 2 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish.

Tomato Juice – For 1 cup of Tomato Juice, substitute 1/2 cup of tomato sauce plus 1/2 cup of water.
