Irises – Be Careful When You Cut the Leaves
Don’t cut iris leaves after the flowers fade. Leaves carry on photosynthesis and develop nourishment for next year’s growth. Cut off brown tips and remove the flowering stalk down to the rhizome.

Weed Killer – Salt
To keep grass and weeds from growing between stepping stones of your walkway, or in the cracks of your patio stones, sprinkle the stones with a little salt, then sweep it into the cracks. The salt will kill the grass, so be careful not to get it where you don’t want it.
Dissolve Yard Clippings
Spraying beer or soda pop over your yard will dissolve grass clippings easier and help the yard breathe better.
Aerate the Soil
When you are out working in your yard, wear your golf shoes (or soccer shoes, etc.). This will help to break up the surface, and the grass will grow better. Well, it works on golf courses, doesn’t it?
Keep Ants Off Peonies
I’ve heard that putting cucumber peelings around the bottom of peony plants will keep ants away. I wonder if that will keep ants away from other places, as well. . . .hmmm.
By the way, ants are NOT needed to help the flowers open on peonies.
Garden Pest Control
Instead of using toxic pesticides, mix your own natural spray. Here is the recipe:
2 whole heads of garlic
2 hot peppers (can use jalapeno or cayenne or scotch bonnets)
Blend the garlic and peppers in a food processor. Strain the juice into a gallon jug and fill the rest with water. This will be your base concentrate.
To use, mix a third of a cup of the concentrate with a gallon of water. Put it in a spray bottle, and there you go!
Keep in mind, this should only be used outside!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it
‘home,’ can’t digest it, so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works & you don’t have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
Squirrel Away
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn’t hurt the plant and the squirrels won’t come near it.
